Meet Our Herd

Meet our Herd

Blue
30 year old Paint Mare

Blue is the oldest horse at Rescue Rio and a barn favorite! Beautiful and full of spice & spirit, though a little timid with new people. We love watching her learn to be in a larger herd and the safety it has brought her.  She came into the rescue with her lifelong partner, Bob, and they are a package deal, only to be adopted out as companion horses or to an amazing home that just wants to love on two oldies and spoil them for the rest of their days.  That's what we do for them!

While we love our rescues and love the work we do, donations are a big part of what allows us to take in new horses and pay for both food and medical treatment. With the help of our generous and kind-hearted donors, we can keep bringing hope and second chances to horses in need.

Topaz
5 year old Cremello Palomino Paint Mare

Topaz the horse
Topaz (age 5), is a cremello Palomino Paint mare who found herself in need of a safe home when her former home, an equine therapy center, had to close down during the pandemic. We were happy to bring her in and offer her a great start at life! She has tons of personality and is super friendly and sweet! Topaz is up to date on her vaccines and dental care, she loads in a trailer, stands for the vet and farrier care, takes a bath and accepts fly spray, and is currently working at under saddle training. She is available for adoption to a very experienced person who knows horses well and has the time to give to her training needs.

Bob
28 year old Palomino Paint gelding

Bob is the kindest gentle older gelding! He loves connection with people and other horses. He is a favorite playmate to the younger geldings in the herd.  He is also Blue's lifelong companion and they are a package deal! Only adopted out to an experienced home that will care for them both together for their final years.

Buck
19 year old gelding

One of our forever residents, Buck found his way here with a debilitating injury that prevents him from being ridden. Not too long after he arrived he and our youngest human quickly fell for each other and it was decided he should stay to live out his days in our sanctuary.

Moose
22 year old Quarter Horse gelding

Moose is Mr. Personality! He is loved by every person and horse he meets! What can we say other than he is a charmer! He also has asthma that is triggered by dust and mold and has to have a very specific living environment to keep him healthy and breathing well.  We actually made him his own pasture free of round bales (a must for him) and a sweet retired mare to be his companion! He is available for adoption to an experienced person who has the ability to provide the same safe living environment he needs.  He is retired from riding and is a companion only horse.

LTX HERD (LAMPASAS TEXAS HERD)

In September of 2022 a herd of unhandedled horses was found abandoned in Lampasas County. A 4 year old pregnant mare, her two stud colts, and 3 other stallions.  The Lampasas Sheriff's Department donated the herd to us after no owners came forward to claim them.  After lots of gentling and training they are slowly coming up for adoption to experienced homes only.

Sarah
7 year old mare
Quarter Horse/Warmblood Cross

Sarah is a barn favorite! One of the sweetest, kindest, and smartest horses we have ever met! We have no doubt that she will become a lucky person's best companion! She is halter/lead trained and currently working on her ground training. She is a beautiful mover and would excel at any discipline. Sarah gave birth to 3 healthy colts already and was a wonderful mother! She is up for adoption to an experienced horse person only.
