Meet Our Herd

Meet our Herd

Coral
9 year old Sorrel Solid Paint Mare

Coral the horse

Coral is a beautiful and kind mare! We are always impressed with how quickly she learns! She is part of an unhandled herd of 13 that was owner surrendered in 2022.  She had one colt and was pregnant with a filly when she came to Rescue Rio. She is up to date on all her vaccines and dental care, stands well for the vet, is working on feeling comfortable in a trailer and trusting her hooves to hoof care. She will be learning how to love a bath as the weather warms up. She is currently up for adoption to a very experienced horse person who knows horses well and has the time to give to her training needs.

While we love our rescues and love the work we do, donations are a big part of what allows us to take in new horses and pay for both food and medical treatment. With the help of our generous and kind-hearted donors, we can keep bringing hope and second chances to horses in need.

Topaz
5 year old Cremello Palomino Paint Mare

Topaz the horse
Topaz (age 5), is a cremello Palomino Paint mare who found herself in need of a safe home when her former home, an equine therapy center, had to close down during the pandemic. We were happy to bring her in and offer her a great start at life! She has tons of personality and is super friendly and sweet! Topaz is up to date on her vaccines and dental care, she loads in a trailer, stands for the vet and farrier care, takes a bath and accepts fly spray, and is currently working at under saddle training. She is available for adoption to a very experienced person who knows horses well and has the time to give to her training needs.

Buck

One of forever residents, Buck (18 year old gelding) found his way here with a debilitating injury that prevents him from being rideable. Not too long after he arrived he and our youngest human quickly fell for each other and it was decided he should stay to live out his days in our sanctuary.

Captain

Captain Jasper the horse
Captain Jasper (4 year old gelding) and Coral (age unknown) came in as part of an owner surrender situation. They are unhandled, however, they've already begun to settle into their new lives at Rescue Rio and we are hopeful they will come to feel safe and loved during their time with us.

LTX HERD (LAMPASAS TEXAS HERD)

In September of 2022 a herd of unhandedled horses was found abandoned in Lampasas County. A 4 year old pregnant mare, her two stud colts, and 3 other stallions.  The Lampasas Sheriff's Department donated the herd to us after no owners came forward to claim them.  After lots of gentling and training they are slowly coming up for adoption to experienced homes only.
